US Deploys New Aircraft Carrier to Middle East Amid Iran Tensions

The United States is preparing to deploy the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East to assume security and military duties, as part of a routine naval rotation amid escalating tensions with Iran and ongoing military operations in the region.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the USS George Washington will replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which completed an extended and intensive deployment as part of Operation "Epic Rage," related to American operations against Iran.

The move does not necessarily signify an increase in the number of U.S. aircraft carriers deployed in the Middle East but is part of a pre-planned rotation schedule for naval assets, as the Lincoln's mission nears its conclusion.

The USS Abraham Lincoln experienced an exceptional deployment period exceeding 250 days, with approximately 200 consecutive days at sea without port visits, raising concerns about the strain on its crew and their service conditions.

U.S. reports indicated congressional criticism regarding crew conditions, including complaints about shortages of supplies, issues with water, medical services, psychological safety, and delayed mail delivery to personnel.

According to the report, the carrier replacement was previously scheduled, but the extended deployment of the Lincoln and the increasing pressure on its crew have brought the rotation into sharper focus.

The USS George Washington, previously operating in the Pacific region, was observed transiting the Strait of Malacca en route to the U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility, which oversees American military operations in the Middle East.

The deployment of the new carrier comes as the United States continues to bolster its military presence in the region, amidst rising tensions with Iran and concerns about a widening regional conflict.
